Why HubPages is the Perfect Writing Site for Me

Ready to Write a Hub

Settling in at HubPages

I joined HubPages almost two years ago, wrote a few hubs, and retreated back into my other writing sites on line. I didn't really feel at home and comfortable with HubPages then. Back then it seemed harder to get capsules to do what I wanted them to. There weren't any polls or quizzes. Now there are a lot of new modules which make building hubs much more satisfying. The more building blocks one has, the more creative one can be in constructing a unique hub.So, I am happier with the writing process here now than I was at first.

That, though, is not the cause of my new-found enthusiasm for the site. What I appreciate most now are the various kinds of writing one can do and the conversations one can have in the comments sections. To contribute on HubPages, I don't always have to write a full hub. If I'm not feeling particularly inspired, if there's no idea in my brain fighting to come out on the keyboard, I can still find a question to answer or read and comment on someone else's hub, or see what's happening in the forums. One can get to know others a bit as you read their hubs.

Best of all, I can do the kind of writing I am best at here. My strength has always been in answering questions and participating in discussions. Answering a question makes me think and try to get at the heart of what someone wants to know. Sometimes others have already given great answers and I can just vote them up or down -- usually up. Sometimes I think there is something I can add. And sometimes trying to answer a question leads me to write a hub, thus solving the problem of what to write about. This kind of interaction is one of the primary reasons I am feeling more and more at home here.

How You Can Find Your Way Around HubPages

If HubPages is your first writing site, it may be easier to feel at home right away, since you are starting your on-line writing career here. It's always a good idea to read all the help files, terms of service, policies, and frequently asked questions before writing anything so that you don't make any big mistakes. You will learn to sign up for AdSense and Amazon if you wish. Other members will help you settle in and find your way around. Pretty soon you will feel connected if you participate in all the opportunities offered to interact with others on the site.

If, however, you have already been very active on some other site, you will find a different way of connecting here that may feel strange at first. As many of you know, I had been active primarily on Squidoo when I first arrived. I was used to writing lenses with a lot more bells and whistles. I was used to putting Zazzle products in my lenses to both promote them and have a great source of images to fit almost any subject. I couldn't do that here. That's one thing I do miss. I've also been spoiled, as a Giant Squid, in no longer having to count how many outgoing links per domain I have, whereas here, I still have to count and watch where my images are hosted. If you come to HubPages as a Giant Squid, you will also have to make these adjustments.

Also, I was familiar with the Squidoo culture -- something that if you went from HubPages to Squidoo, you mind find strange and have to acclimate to. I have already written a detailed hub on the Squidoo culture for those who are considering adding another site. HubPages has a different culture and writing environment. If you are making the transition from Squidoo to here, I have some suggestions to help you acclimate faster than I did.

First, start by reading hubs. Find some people you want to follow and read what they write. Comment. You will notice that commenting is much more interactive on HubPages and more real conversations go on. I have not seen as much of that kind of interaction on Squidoo. It's one of the things I really appreciate about HubPages.

Second, look over the questions and see if there are any you want to answer. Read how others have answered the questions that interest you. You just may be inspired to write a hub to answer one of those questions. When you read someone else's hub and have unanswered questions, you can click on the right side to ask the author a question, and that will start another discusssion, as other people will also have a chance to answer. I have gotten useful answers that way.

You also might want to look over the forums. It's a good way to meet people and get an idea of which people you might want to follow. I tend to follow people who have high scores because I believe I will learn the most from them, but I also follow new hubbers who have low starting scores if I like their work. I generally don't follow people until they have written a few hubs because there isn't anything to read yet.

Don't neglect hub-hopping. This is a great way to meet new hubbers. You might have the chance to encourage someone who just wrote a first hub by commenting and voting that first hub up. You also will get the chance to see new work from your favorite hubbers as soon as it's live. Best of all, you can hop a couple of hubs while you're taking a break from other work and you don't have a lot of time.

There are still many parts of HubPages I've not had a chance to explore. Most of these are on the forum. I just haven't had much time to spend there yet. I'm sure that someday I will. But one reason I like HubPages is that there are many opportunities that I can still look forward to, and I can take advantage of them at my own pace, without pressure. I would enjoy having time to write several hubs a week all year long, but I don't have the time. So I do what I can, take a new path now and then, and come back whenever I can. Since I have come back to HubPages and settled in, I now have two writing homes and can easily move from one to the other and take advantage of the best features of each. You can do the same.

Very nice hub. I rated this 'useful'. I like your point "Don't neglect hub-hopping." - that is where I "met" you :) All the best.

Oh, so glad you mentioned Hub Hopping! Flagging Hubs whilst Hub Hopping also helps to ensure that HubPages remains a high quality site :D

I'm glad some of you found me through hub hopping. I find people in so many different ways that I can't remember exactly whom I've found by hopping. It's pretty easy to go on a following spree, because as soon as you follow someone, you are taken to a list of the ones he follows, and so on. I always try to follow some of the people those I follow follow, because I find many of those people also share my interests.

Simone, I haven't found much to flag yet -- the worst I've done yet is a thumbs down. Maybe I've just been lucky not to run into any spammy hubs yet. I would never flag something I just didn't like. I'd move on. Guess I figure if I don't do anything and others feel the same way, the hub just won't get many thumbs up ratings or comments. Are we supposed to flag bad writing, which can be a subjective call, or just hubs written on taboo topics? I'll have to read those guidelines again.

WannaB Writer, I'm not sure, but what you are calling 'bad writing' could well be a 'spun' article! If you suspect this then you should 'flag' the article to bring it to the attention of 'staff'. They will then decide if it is in fact 'spun' or just badly written! :-)

I couldn't agree more! I was a little awkward a few years ago when I started on HubPages. I even stopped activity for a long time. I am glad to be back because I get to meet and share ideas with people like you! Great Job, as always.

agvulpes, it's more bad grammar that resembles what you find in some spam email messages, but could simply be produced by English learners. Is that how spun article appear? Some articles I see as a Squidoo Angel seem to have better English, but I suspect they may be partly copied from affiliate landing pages -- I just can't prove it and assume that the filters for duplicate content would filter such things out. Some other writing I consider not well done is in poetry format but doesn't really seem like good poetry, or even good verse. I'm tempted to give it a thumbs down, but often pass it because what seems bad to me might seem good to someone else. I also see good poetry, so I'm not against poets. I'll read the guidelines again on flagging to make sure I flag what should be flagged.

J.S., did you mean you felt awkward using the site because you didn't feel acclimated to it yet? Or did you feel your writing was awkward? Glad you came back, either way.

I felt that the whole experience was a bit awkward. I have always loved to write but I was limited to pen and paper. The electronic version of writing was a major change that took me a while to embrace.

J.S., Was HubPages the first writing site you tried?

J.S.Matthew profile image

Pretty much, yes. I tried Blogger, She Told Me and Digg, and some freelance contracting sites, but I have enjoyed HubPages the most. I am a person on HubPages, not just a link.

I really enjoyed reading this, especially since you have so much Squidoo experience, too. I have had a tough time getting used to hubs, and just now after over a year, I am beginning to feel comfortable. I have made 22 hubs in all -- now I think I can begin to experiment and learn more! :) I simply have to realize this is not Squidoo - Like Dorothy to Toto, "we're not at Squidoo anymore." :)

Great writer you are WannaB ...Happy Easter

WannaB Writer profile image

WannaB Writer Hub Author 13 months ago

moonvine, I think that's the secret. Learn the culture and then pick the best place to put each piece of writing. For some jobs, only Squidoo will do. For others,HubPages is the right place. I've been spending so much time here this month I'm beginning to feel like I'm only a visitor at Squidoo. I think it's much faster to write a hub than a lens, but you see payouts sooner at Squidoo.

I agree with moonvine; this was very informative to me as a Squidoo veteran. I really like it over here, though you'd never know it by my volume of hubs (though they've produced some nice sales!). Thanks for the encouragement and the very helpful advice.

WannaB Writer Hub Author 13 months ago

Susan, There are only so many pieces of writing you can keep updating constantly and watching over. Squidoo puts a lot of pressure on for that updating, HubPages not so much. The comments do a lot of it here. That leaves more time for writing hubs and responding to comments than constantly thinking of things to update lenses that seemed pretty complete when you wrote them.

I loved your hub! He played in the right spots, I'm on the site three years ago and I think I'm just now finding my way right now to write on that money just to try and neglecting the things I liked. Today I am pleased and write about what I want. Great hub. Congratulations!

Nice article. I haven't had much time recently to spend on Hubpages, but this article has inspired me again to be here more often...

I just answered a comment that you posted on my Hub some time ago. So, that's how I've found you, via a comment that you posted to my Hub. For me, that's the most common way to find new people on Hubpages, via their comments on other Hubs.

We do share a lot of things in common and I do have interest in writing as well. The best part of HubPages is, as you said, the community around here and the warmth of the fellow HubPages users and followers. You're absolutely correct that we don't need our hubs to be perfectly written or accurately correct. There are our friends and a great community around who are there to share their thoughts and help us. Thanks for sharing this and nice to meet you!

Victoria, one thing I've learned from my own experience, though others may have a different experience, is that if one has had a good experience on one's first site, one can love that site and just want to stay with it. That was my experience on SQuidoo. I was happy, there was a great community in RocketMoms and other small groups where members helped and supported each other, and I was reveling in finally being able to write and have an audience. After a few months I was beginning to see some payouts, but my threshold for payments was one fifth what it is here, since adsense money was shared and you don't need to wait for a Google payout. It was through other Squidoo members I heard about HubPages, so I thought I'd see what it was like. I did not immerse myself. I just dabbled in it. I was still very happy at Squidoo. As I said, the contests lured me deeper into HubPages, and I was fortunate enough to taste some prize money in the first contest I entered. So I came here more.

Meanwhile, back at Squidoo, the culture was changing, as I've written in other hubs. This past year they disbanded RocketMoms, and now the only real community I have at Squidoo is on a Facebook group. All the new things intended to make me have more fun I saw as distractions, and that tie I had started to unravel. I'm not leaving. I'm just not seeing it as the #1 site for me now. It's become one of many to spread my time between. Meanwhile, HubPages keeps improving and I'm beginning to make new friends here I didn't know at Squidoo. So HubPages is now my #1 site, and the place I will invest most of my writing site time now.
